Replacing Empty Ink Cartridges
The price of replacing printer ink cartridges has always been a rip-off in my opinion. The prices are high to begin with, and they seem to keep going higher all the time. I usually left the store after purchasing them feeling as if I’d been robbed.
Apparently I am not the only one who has noticed this fact. In our city a small chain of stores was opened up by an enterprising woman who saw in this situation a business opportunity. The shop accepts empty ink cartridges from people and fills them up again. They sell for about half the price of new ink cartridges, and they help the environment a bit because the ink cartridges are recycled. The problem I had with the recycled cartridges was that somewhere between one-fourth and one-half of them just didn’t work.
I eventually gave up on the used ink cartridge shop and purchased a new Kodak printer. Kodak obviously saw that people were frustrated with being ripped off when buying new cartridges, and their system is touted to cost a lot less than the that of the market leader in printers. In fact I have found this to be true, and the costs are running about half of those for my previous printer.
A few years ago I noticed that my father and some of his retired engineer friends would attempt to save money by refilling old printer ink cartridges themselves. They did save money, but they usually made a big mess, so I never got so desperate as to follow that example.
These days there are web sites that have done on-line essentially the same thing as the replacement ink cartridge shops referred to above. They have truly low prices on replacement ink. Even though my Kodak printer already is an improvement, I have purchased color cartridges for it for only about $9US, and of course the black ink is even less.
The best news of all is that some of these online businesses will even offer free shipping if your order is large enough. In my case I only had to spend $55US to get free shipping. And the ink cartridges can be returned for any reason for up to a year, whether they have been opened or not. So this is an excellent program.
